After months of anticipation, there’s nothing more exciting than realising that you’re almost ready to head off overseas. Hang on, not so fast! Before you board the plane, there are a few things you need to remember to add on to that pre-holiday to do list. From travel insurance to copying your documents, today we’ll be running through what you need to take care off before you set off.

Check your passport

This might seem like an obvious one but it’s so common for people to realise at the last minute that they don’t have enough time left on their passport. Many countries require you to have at least six months left on your passport before you can be issued with a visa so renew your passport if you’re cutting it fine. Also, make a copy of your passport (and other important documents) and store it separately – this makes life a lot easier if you lose the originals on holiday!

Get vaccinated

Look, none of us like needles but you may need specific vaccinations for certain countries. Your doctor will be able to let you know about the current vaccination recommendations for various countries so you can be protected. While you’re at your doctor for your jabs, ask them for a letter confirming any medications you might be on so you have evidence if customs get awkward.

Have some local cash

Although these days you’ll be able to simply use your credit card or ATM card when you travel overseas, there will still be places that require cash. Rather than having to worry about organising foreign currency at the other end, organise some local cash before you go so you can buy some food and pay for a taxi straight away when you arrive at your destination. Trust us, it makes life a lot easier!

Double check travel warnings

Although you can still travel to most countries despite travel warnings, it’s good to know if there are any traveller warnings and alerts to the country you’re visiting. Head to the Smartraveller website to check out what’s happening and to register your travel details. Remember, certain warnings can impact on your travel insurance so speak to your broker if you’re worried.

Organise travel insurance

Although you hope you won’t need your travel insurance while you’re away, it offers you peace of mind that you have cover if things go wrong. From lost items and theft to broken bones and illness, you travel insurance has you covered so remember to sign up before you go. Make sure you organise your insurance with plenty of time because most policies will also cover the cost of your flights if you aren’t able to travel as scheduled.
